The Difference

Masterbatch vs Pigment

A pigment is a dry powder material which can also be used to impart colour during the plastic manufacturing process. Pigments can be used to give colour and enhance the finish or quality of plastic products but their use is limiting and less favourable when compared with masterbatch.

Colour accuracy & consistency

Manufacturers prefer to use masterbatch to achieve more precise and consistent colour in plastic products because they provide better dispersion than raw powder pigments. Using masterbatches also allow for higher opacity or transparency control for end products.

Storage & Handling

Masterbatches are produced in pellet form which means they are much easier to handle and store.

Brightness

It is possible to achieve brighter and more vivid colour using masterbatches.

Multi-use

Masterbatches can include functional additives and fillers which are encapsulated in the carrier resin. If raw pigment powders are used in the manufacturing process then additives will need to be measured and included separately during the manufacturing process.
